‘American Masterpieces’
1.15pm 20th February, 2019 @RWCMD
A varied and atmospheric lunchtime treat, with three masterpieces from American masters of the 20th Century. Copland’s ' El Salon Mexico' depicts an imaginary dance hall in Mexico City, complementing Bernstein’s classical/jazz fusion 'Prelude, Fugue and Riffs', written in 1949 for Woody Hermann and his Big Band. Gershwin’s 'An American in Paris' conjures up the sights and energy of the French capital in the 1920s.
RWCMD Chamber Winds
‘Echoes of Youth’
1.15pm 13th March, 2019 @RWCMD
Chamber Winds version of ‘And the Sun Stood Still’
Sunrise, sunset – in old age, amid a world devastated by war, Richard Strauss turned to the wind ensemble, and somehow, miraculously, summoned up the spirit of Mozart. Playful, mellow and melodious, his Sonatine no.1 is the perfect complement to new works by two young Royal Welsh College composers at the very start of their careers, and both drawing inspiration from the eternal cycle of nature.
